A Conversation of Faith and Legacy: Sir Cliff Richard OBE and Canon Roger Royle

Canon Roger Royle and Sir Cliff Richard OBE in conversation

In September 2024, two longstanding patrons of Mildmay Hospital - legendary musician Sir Cliff Richard OBE and Anglican priest and broadcaster the Revd. Canon Roger Royle - came together to reflect on their shared commitment to the hospital’s pioneering work and Sir Cliff's journey of faith.

Their conversation, recorded in this special video, offers a glimpse into both men’s dedication to Mildmay and their reflections on its vital role in caring for those most in need. It features a deeply personal segment where Sir Cliff Richard speaks about his Christian faith and how it has shaped his life. He recalls the life-changing moment when he encountered the evangelist Billy Graham, whose ministry guided him to embrace Christianity. Sir Cliff’s journey to faith became a foundation that has provided him with strength, purpose, and a deep sense of calling throughout his career. In his testimony, Sir Cliff speaks of the profound importance of Christian values and how they have influenced his personal and professional life, grounding him through the challenges and successes he has faced.

As Sir Cliff reflects on his remarkable career, he shares stories from his early days in music - how musical legends like Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, and Little Richard inspired his journey into rock and roll - and his long history of supporting Mildmay. Our patrons recount the early days of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and Mildmay’s courageous and compassionate role in pioneering HIV/AIDS care at a time when few others would.

Both men highlight the transformative role of Diana, Princess of Wales, whose many visits to Mildmay helped to challenge the stigma surrounding HIV and show the world a more compassionate response to the crisis. Sir Cliff fondly remembers a dinner with Princess Diana, where her kindness and humility shone through.

The conversation also marks a recent milestone in Mildmay’s history: the naming of the Mildmay line on the London Overground. This recognition, part of a broader initiative by the Mayor of London and Transport for London to celebrate the city’s diverse history, honours the hospital’s groundbreaking work in HIV/AIDS care and its ongoing support for the LGBTQIA+ communities, as well as its 160-year legacy of service to East London.

At the heart of this conversation is a message of faith, compassion, and service - values that continue to inspire Mildmay’s work today. We invite you to watch this special video and join us in celebrating Sir Cliff and Canon Roger’s wonderful support for Mildmay, their journey of faith, and the enduring legacy of Mildmay Hospital.
