Hanukkah Sameach!
As Hanukkah begins at sundown this December, people of all backgrounds can appreciate the festival’s deeper message: the triumph of resilience, the power of hope, and the enduring spirit of perseverance in the face of adversity.
Although Hanukkah is rooted in Jewish history, its themes transcend religious boundaries, offering inspiration for anyone seeking light in the darkest moments of life.
The story behind Hanukkah dates back over two thousand years, to a time when a small group of Jewish warriors, led by Judah Maccabee, fought against overwhelming odds to reclaim their sacred Temple from foreign occupiers. Their victory was remarkable not only for its military success but for the restoration of their faith and cultural identity in the face of oppression.
Perhaps the most well-known aspect of Hanukkah is the miracle of the oil. After the Temple was rededicated, there was only enough sacred oil to light the menorah for one night. Yet, the flames burned for eight days—an event seen as a divine sign of hope and resilience. It’s this miracle that is commemorated every year during Hanukkah, as families light the menorah, adding one candle each night, culminating in a celebration of light.
From a non-Jewish perspective, Hanukkah offers a reminder of universal values that we can all embrace. The candles, which symbolise the light that overcame the darkness, can remind us to be the light in our own communities. In a world that often feels divided and uncertain, the story of Hanukkah reminds us that resilience, hope, and unity are more powerful than we may realise.
This holiday season, let the flames of the menorah be a beacon for all of us—a symbol that no matter the challenges we face, light and hope will always endure.
