Holocaust Memorial Day 2022

Holocaust Memorial Day 2022

Thursday 27 January 2022

Holocaust Memorial Day is a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of the Jews and others who suffered in the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution. It was first held in January 2001 and has been on the same date every year since. .

At Mildmay Mission Hospital, each year we remember Holocaust Memorial Day as 27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. Every year on that day Holocaust Memorial Day takes place. In the words of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, “Holocaust Memorial Day encourages remembrance in a world scarred by genocide”. The trust promotes and supports Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) – the international day on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Covid permitting, we are hoping that the person invited to share a memory/a story during our Service in the chapel on the allotted day will, according to hospital regulations, be able to join us. The theme this year is: ONE DAY. We are invited to learn about, to read about, to reflect on a day that occurred during this genocide, hoping and praying that this ‘one day’ never returns.
