Laetare Sunday: Fourth Week of Lent 2025

Cherry blossom flowers

The Fourth Sunday of Lent, known as Laetare Sunday, is a moment of joyful pause in the midst of our Lenten journey.

The name Laetare comes from the Latin word meaning "Rejoice," taken from the opening words of the traditional introit: "Rejoice, O Jerusalem: and come together all you that love her: rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow." (Isaiah 66:10)

Lent is a season of solemnity, reflection, and self-discipline, but even in this time of spiritual renewal, the Church reminds us that joy is essential. Laetare Sunday serves as a midway encouragement, reminding us that Easter is drawing closer, and our sacrifices are leading us towards the light of Christ’s resurrection.

On this day, we see subtle changes in the liturgy—rose-coloured vestments may be worn instead of penitential purple, and the tone of worship shifts from deep reflection to hope and anticipation. Traditionally, even Lenten restrictions were eased for the day, and in centuries past, weddings—which were typically not permitted during Lent—could take place on Laetare Sunday.

This moment of joy does not diminish the importance of our Lenten sacrifices; rather, it strengthens us for the road ahead. Like a traveller pausing to take in a beautiful view on a long journey, Laetare Sunday invites us to reflect on the progress we have made so far, to be kind to ourselves, and to rejoice in the hope of the resurrection to come.

A Prayer for Laetare Sunday

Loving God, in the midst of Lent,

You remind us to rejoice.

May we find strength and encouragement in

Your presence as we continue our journey

of reflection and renewal.

Fill our hearts with joy and hope

as we look towards the promise of Easter.

Amen.

"The 4th Sunday of Lent begins with an exhortation to rejoice in the motherhood of God's holy Church, and in the new creation brought about by grace. The vestments are lightened to a shade of rose (or pink) in memory of a golden rose that used to be blessed on this day. But at this time of year, we have these other beautiful pink flowers to enjoy: cherry blossom."
