At Mildmay Hospital, we are fortunate to count Lord Darzi, renowned for his commitment to healthcare reform, among our patrons.
In an article in today's Guardian, Lord Ara Darzi shares his insights on the future of the NHS. His report on the current state of the NHS reveals a system under immense strain, with declining patient care and increasing wait times. While public trust in the NHS is low, Darzi highlights that it can recover, supported by the world-class staff and innovation it houses.
He advocates for a prevention-focused approach beyond hospitals, urging government action on public health through collaboration with businesses and investment in children’s health. He also suggests implementing health levies on businesses profiting from harmful products, using the revenue for prevention and promoting healthier living across society.
As Lord Darzi rightly points out, health is a human right, but also a cornerstone of a strong economy. As we continue our work at Mildmay, we are inspired by his vision of a preventive, inclusive approach to healthcare – one that addresses the root causes of ill health in society and builds a healthier future for all.
By championing prevention, we can ensure that the NHS – and healthcare organisations like Mildmay – continue to serve those who need us most, delivering care where it matters and making a lasting impact on the lives of many.
Prof Lord Darzi is a former health minister, Paul Hamlyn chair of surgery at Imperial College London, co-chair of the IPPR Commission on Health and Prosperity, and a patron of Mildmay.
