The Fourth Week of Advent: Welcoming Love and Peace

The fourth advent candle has been lit.

As we enter the final week of Advent, we light the fourth candle, the last of the purple candles. Known as the “Angel’s Candle,” it symbolises love - the love that surrounds the season and culminates in the birth of Christ.

This week, we are reminded of God’s boundless love, a love made manifest in the gift of His Son. The angel Gabriel brought the good news of this love, proclaiming the arrival of the Saviour who would bring hope and light to the world.

In these last days before Christmas, as we conclude our Advent journey, we are invited to reflect on this love—a love that transcends all boundaries and that is freely given to us. It’s a love that calls us to care for one another, just as God cares for us.

As we prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ birth, let the lighting of the Angel’s Candle remind us of the deep and abiding love at the heart of Christmas. A love that brings peace, joy, and hope to the world.

Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:

He is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples.

He is the wisdom that teaches and guides us.

He is the Saviour of every nation. Lord God,

let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath.

May the wreath and its light

be a sign of Christ’s promise

to bring us salvation.

May he come quickly and not delay.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
