World Homeless Day: Addressing Homelessness Through Compassionate Care

World Homeless Day is on 10 October every year and draws attention to the needs of people experiencing homelessness.

On World Homeless Day, we at Mildmay Hospital want to highlight the growing homelessness crisis in the UK, particularly in London, where vulnerable populations continue to face extreme challenges. Homelessness is not just about lacking shelter - it’s about the compounding effects of poverty, illness, and isolation, all of which severely impact a person's ability to recover from health problems. At Mildmay, we see firsthand how this crisis intersects with health, and we are committed to offering support through our specialised healthcare services.

Homelessness in the UK has been on the rise, with thousands of people sleeping rough or living in insecure accommodation every night. In London alone, the situation is particularly severe, with the number of rough sleepers increasing over recent years. Homelessness is not just an issue of housing - those experiencing it are often left struggling with chronic health conditions, mental illness, and substance abuse. Without access to stable shelter, recovery from illness or injury is incredibly difficult.

The economic downturn, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, has worsened the situation for many, pushing more individuals into homelessness. Cuts to social services and mental health support have only added to the challenges facing those without a secure home, making it harder for them to access the care they need.

We recognise that homelessness and poor health are inextricably linked. Many of our patients come to us with complex needs, including those experiencing homelessness. Our REBUILD Pathway, for example, is specifically designed for patients who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, offering post-detoxification stabilisation and rehabilitation support. We provide medical care that is tailored to the unique needs of homeless individuals, many of whom also face HIV, mental health or neurocognitive challenges.

Our approach extends beyond just healthcare. We collaborate closely with housing services, social workers, and charities to ensure that patients can access stable accommodation and receive ongoing support. We understand that providing holistic care - encompassing both physical and mental health, as well as social needs - is critical for enabling patients to regain their independence and reintegrate into society.

Call to Action

On this World Homeless Day, we urge people to reflect on the systemic issues that lead to homelessness, and to consider how we can all be part of the solution. Homelessness is not inevitable. With the right interventions, compassionate care, and community support, people can rebuild their lives.

Mildmay remains dedicated to supporting those most in need, but we cannot do it alone. We rely on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. With your help, we can provide not only immediate medical care, but also a pathway to stability and dignity for those facing the challenges of homelessness.

Support our work and learn more about how you can help.
